Cyprus plans major Kato Paphos coastal highway expansion
Authorities in Kato Paphos have announced plans for a major infrastructure project to construct a modern four-lane highway connecting the Tombs of the Kings in Kato Paphos to Coral Bay in Pegeia.
Government departments, consultants, and local authorities have begun coordinating efforts to realise the long-planned project, which aims to modernise the coastal route.
The development will create a four-lane highway meeting contemporary safety standards and public service requirements. Initial coordination meetings were held at the Ministry of Transport over the summer, followed by a second meeting in Pegeia in early September.
The regulatory plan is expected to be finalised before the Christmas holidays, according to officials involved in the project.
Marinos Lambrou, Mayor of Akamas, told philenews that the road upgrade is crucial for the lower Paphos region, which houses approximately 40 percent of the district’s tourist accommodations.
The current road lacks adequate safety measures for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, with several sections missing proper lighting and pavements, Lambrou said.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the Municipality of Akamas pledging support to expedite the project’s completion.
